Destocking Drought Module to be added to Farming Forecaster

The Farming Forecaster project that TFS have been apart of since inception, is incorporating a new module into the tool to assist farmers preparedness for drought. During times of drought the GrassGro model that is used for the pasture forecasting will have capacity to incorporate destocking into drought containment lots. The destocking drought module will be a valuable tool in drought preparedness and will give producers an improved understanding of timely drought decision making and the consequences for groundcover and pasture availability.

A media release that has been sent out is available to TFS members – Drought Containment media release 28_3_22 AM

This destocking drought module is being produced as part of Climate Smart Pilots and the NSW Primary Industries Climate Change Research Strategy backed by the NSW Climate Change Fund. The Farming Forecaster project is managed by a consortium made up of Monaro Farming Systems, Tablelands Farming Systems, Bookham Ag Bureau, SE Local Land Services with funding provided by the Australian Government’s  NLP Program.

Maximising co-benefits of trees on farm

We received an email from Dr Rachelle Meyer from The University of Melbourne regarding some research she and her team are undertaking. The ‘Trees on Farm: Maximising Co-benefits’ project is funded by MLA and DJPR. They are developing a database of benefits and challenges of trees on farms, estimating their value to farm operations, and creating a decision framework. The aim is to enable more informed decisions around planting trees on farm.

They are looking for farmers willing to participate and be interviewed via Zoom, from across different regions. The interviews take approximately an hour. If you are interested in participating please review the below ‘Plain Language Statement’ and make contact with the researchers whose contact details can be found at the end of the statement.

WEC table 21.4.22

WEC 29.3.22 – its been nearly a month since the last WEC table was put up and there has been lots of tests submitted in this time. Worm numbers have been on the increase since last table in February and again Barbers Pole is the dominant worm type in the cultured samples.

WEC table 26.2.22 – note that this WEC table contains 5 entries that have all been cultured. The culture results show that Barbers Pole worm is dominant in these results.

WEC table 20.10.21

WEC table 26.9.21

WEC table 4.9.21 – A worm table prepared at the same time last year resulted in an average Strongyle EPG of 96. This worm table’s average EPG for Strongyle worms is over 4 times higher, at 421.

WEC table 11.8.21

WEC Table 25.7.21

WEC table 3.7.21

WEC table 16.6.21

WEC table 4.6.21 – record testing numbers in the WEC table this fortnight. Of interest, there have been several positive tests for fluke in the Bungendore area and one member is undertaking a drench resistance test. This member’s day 0 test results are included in this table.

WEC Table 18.5.21

WEC table 27.4.21 – Please let us know if you need any test kits – we have a supply on hand.

WEC table 12.4.21 – this fortnight’s table is a little late as we wanted to wait to have all the larval cultures in from the lab for all the tests submitted. We are looking forward to next week’s presentation from Matt Playford which will provide some options for dealing with this season’s worm trends.

WEC table 25.3.21 – only 2 entries for this past fortnight. Of note is the high recording of Chabertia/Oesophagostomum with one of the test results. We have reached out to Dawbuts regarding this and will let you know if there is anything to report regarding this.

WEC table 9.3.21 – Another high number of WEC tests submitted in this past fortnight.

WEC table 22.2.21 – We have had a number of WEC tests submitted since the last table was uploaded with a high percentage of these larval cultured. This information is critical knowledge for producers in understanding the target worm type and which effective drench to use. You will also notice another member has elected to carry out a drench test – with member consent we will look to bring you the results of these.

We are also receiving some results with tapeworm (Moniezia) & Coccidia present. On the Dawbuts test results, the level of infiltration of these is displayed using a scale – 1 – 50 observed = +, 51 – 100 observed = ++ & more than 100 observed = +++.

WEC table 4.2.21 – the second WEC table for 2021 has returned 4 finalised test results. The only results that have been cultured from these 4 are part of a drench resistance test initiated by the producer and conducted by Dawbuts. We have received a number of other tests but are waiting on culture results before entering these.

WEC table 20.1.21 – our first WEC table for 2021. There have been a few results sent in over the Christmas period with these showing that worm numbers are increasing. Please complete as much information as possible on the submission forms to the labs as it will make these tables more valuable.

Please get in touch to receive your 3 test kits that come with your membership if you haven’t received them already.

Fertilising your Pastures. Can you afford not to?

We came across this article, ‘Fertilising your pastures – Can you afford not to?’ written by Ross Kuchel, Snr Ag Advisor with SELLS and thought it might be of interest to TFS members. This was a discussion point at the final Healthy Soils workshop held earlier this month, so this article’s timing couldn’t be better. This was originally distributed in the LLS monthly circular.

Bookham Wether Trial 2022 through to 2026

Further to the original post, we have received the rules and entry form for the Bookham Wether Trial. These are available below:

BOOKHAM WETHER TRIAL 2023 TO 2026 Rules Regs

BOOKHAM WETHER TRIAL 2022 TO 2026 Entry Form

Doug Painting has very kindly put himself forward to be the next host of the wether trial. Induction of the wether weaners is planned to be in early March, with date and drop off location to be confirmed closer to the date. Anyone interested in participating in the trial needs to complete the above entry form and email or post it back to the Bookham Ag Bureau.

If any TFS members are taking part we would love to know – send us an email and let us know.

———————————————————————————————————————————————————-

We have received an email from the Bookham Ag Bureau inviting any TFS Merino breeders to participate in a wether trial they are conducting, next year.

The Trial in Summary:

  • Induction into the trial and even up shearing of 10 head of 2021 drop wethers will take place in 2022.
  • The trial will consist of 4 shearings starting in 2023 and ending in 2026.
  • The annual results will be based on the individual average wool production performance of each animal in the team.
  • The Overall results calculated after the final shearing in 2026 will be based on the average wool production and carcass value of each animal in the team.

The host property and delivery date are yet to be confirmed but as some breeders are nearing weaning and looking to sell wether lambs, the Bookham Ag Bureau are calling for expressions of interest now. This can be done by email to bookhamagbureau@gmail.com or by phone to Davo Weir 0421 732 748.
